No co by jste tomu rekli (myslim konkretne ty verzi gcc) .. mam tam vetsi nez je pozadavek a rika to ze ji nechce!
Nahled z INSTALL:

* GCC 3.2 or newer

The GNU C library can only be compiled with the GNU C compiler
family. As of the 2.3 release, GCC 3.2 or higher is required. As
of this writing, GCC 3.2 is the compiler we advise to use.

You can use whatever compiler you like to compile programs that
use GNU libc, but be aware that both GCC 2.7 and 2.8 have bugs in
their floating-point support that may be triggered by the math
library.

Check the FAQ for any special compiler issues on particular
platforms.

ony readme, můžou být taky kapku neaktuální...
Navíc gcc není samostatná záležitost, závisí na spoustě dalších věcí....
Když tak se jukni přímo do toho configure, nebo, co tohle produkuje a podívej se na konkrétní místo, kde se to kontroluje... třeba tam mají chybičku (i když je to nepravděpodobné...)

Když tě to vyfackovalo, tak nedoporučuju to obcházet. GCC je občas pěknej moloch - nekompiluje zrovna podle představ. A je klidně možný, že v době release tý verze nebyla 4ka podporovaná. Nebo je chybička v configure. Zkus to zkompilovat s nějakou verzí 3.x.
